Camí de sirga en anglès

El nostre corresponsal a Edimburg, Stephen Telfer, ens ha trobat la traducció a l’anglès del passatge de Camí de sirga que citàvem avui:

Here is the English translation of the passage illustrating today’s Catalan Word of the Day (thankfully it didn’t take too long to find!):

The dear fellow replied in shocked tones that he hadn’t: after all, he had only been responsible for the introduction (“Come one and all, both young and old, the Ambrosian marvels to behold…”), as the real author, the nightwatchman, couldn’t find an opening that was rousing enough. The priest had then enquired whether there was any truth in the “irreverent and arguably illegal and subversive” views the pharmacist was alleged to have aired on the value of holding processions to beg for rain from a heaven that had sent the scourge of drought to punish the entire nation and which was deaf to all entreaties. Father Ambròs was deeply vexed at the lack of rain, an obsession with the dictator.

Davant la negativa escandalitzada de l’estimadíssim, solament responsable al capdavall del preàmbul de la composició («Escolteu, petits i grans, el veritable romanço dels miracles ambrosians…»), perquè el sereno, pare de l’obra, no aconseguia trobar-li un començament prou engrescador, el sacerdot havia volgut saber si eren certes les frases «irreverents i qui sap si, ben mirades, il·legals i subversives», atribuïdes al farmacèutic, sobre la utilitat de les processons celebrades per implorar la pluja a un Cel que castigava el país sencer amb el flagell de la sequera i que tenia les orelles a cal ferrer. La manca de pluja, obsessió del dictador, feia anar de corcoll mossèn Ambròs.
